Around fifty cars have been marked with what seems to be human bodily fluid in the German city of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, as reported by police.
Automobiles, exterior walls and postal boxes were vandalized, occasionally with prohibited symbols, they announced in a official communication.
Officers state they were contacted late on Wednesday evening, when a resident noticed that a vehicle in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been covered with a red-colored substance.
The substance had been applied in the pattern of a banned symbol, they added.
Police then found multiple other smeared automobiles and house walls in the surrounding area.
Swastikas are prohibited in Germany under laws outlawing the public exhibition of Nazi symbols.
Law enforcement state preliminary tests suggest the liquid was probably blood from a person.
"There is still no indication as to where it came from; investigators are not yet cognizant of any harm in relation with the incident," they added.
City officials announced they were working "to unravel the case" and have appealed to the residents for tips.
A senior official said the incident left him stunned and needed to be addressed rapidly.
"This incident strikes at the core of Hanau and reawakens the pain of the right-wing violent incident in 2020," he stated on social media, referring to the death of nine individuals by a gunman aiming at residents of immigrant origin in 2020.
