An defense official has stated that the MoD is actively investigating the potential security risks associated with Chinese vehicles, and personnel have been instructed to refrain from discussing secret information in all vehicles.
Security Advice for Defence Staff
In a recently aired appearance on LBC, a defence minister commented on reports that Ministry of Defence officials have been instructed not to discuss classified material while travelling in China-made vehicles.
The minister stated that the ministry is “investigating” Chinese vehicles within its fleets, but noted that safety is a concern in all modern cars.
We have a fleet of tens of thousands of vehicles in the Ministry of Defence and those vehicles represent a tiny fraction.
But regardless of if you’re traveling in a vehicle from China or a car from another country, what we’ve asked our staff is to avoid connecting Ministry of Defence technology into their vehicle, not to have discussions at a classified level in any kind of car, because of the increasing threats of surveillance that are present in all automobile, to only have those confidential conversations in protected areas. That’s a prudent and sensible thing for everyone concerned about safety.
When it was suggested that it would be wise for the MoD to cease using all cars from China, the minister responded: That is exactly what we are looking into at the moment.”
Broader Defence Background
This revelation comes as claims from Scandinavian countries have alerted the United Kingdom to the presence of multi-purpose shutdown mechanisms in Chinese buses, which could allow the Chinese government to disable buses and cause chaos to transport systems.
Additionally, a Russian intelligence vessel has been shining laser beams at Royal Air Force aircrew, labeled a “extremely risky” action by government representatives.
This wider security environment highlights the importance of robust protocols and caution in all aspects of official activities, including transport usage to communication habits.
