Each time a prominent awards ceremony nears, there’s always a demand for introducing additional classifications to recognize underappreciated efforts and fill the spirits of fans dedicated to specific genres.
A fellow writer made the case supporting a scary games classification. That would be fantastic. The same goes for strategy board titles, this being a dedicated supporter's campaign. Yet I need to apologize in advance when I prioritize because like all single-minded supporters, I possess a compelling case for why my demand is the most urgent above others. The demand is this: There should be a classification for brain-teasing titles.
Categorizing Game Types
Organizing artistic expressions isn't exact; opinions vary greatly, and inevitably spark debates resulting in unclear classifications. It's understandable that cinema institutions avoid this approach. Yet it remains an unavoidable compromise within the realm of gaming, showing incredible range they hardly constitute a single creative category.
To recognize the complete range of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, while allowing diverse titles to compete fairly, genre categories are essential.
Current Gaming Award Categories
Leading game ceremonies currently feature genre categories for Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these award types effectively encompass many game types, making space possible for most games within them.
Different situation exists for brain-teasing titles. There’s simply nowhere to accommodate them. Think about these this year’s best games, all very different: the architectural riddles of one title, fast-paced pattern recognition of another game, engaging interpersonal challenges from additional release. Which classification works among existing types? Nowhere, that’s where.
Recognition Challenges
There are dozens of brilliant puzzle games released every year without proper recognition at major award shows, if they accidentally match award groups including Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging independent game categories.
- An iconic brain-teaser received no recognition in any category in 2014
- Another creative title was excluded in 2019
- Popular arranging title was overlooked that year
- Limited numbers of logic titles scraped into small studio or handheld classifications
Importance of Logic Titles
Frequently they represent modest productions, but the art in brain-teasers holds tremendous importance. Famous handheld logic titles rank among the most-played games globally continuing this trend for many years.
The legendary block-stacking game rivals popular creative games claiming status as most purchased experience; it also contends for best game of all time. Logic titles represent cornerstones to the art of video games, while interacting with diverse game types.
The Solution and Justification
Puzzle games wouldn’t have this problem. It would be easy to populate five nominees interesting, varied, worthy titles every year with ease — actually, with challenge, since numerous excellent many worthy titles.
Restating the point, these represent titles lacking appropriate categories during prominent ceremonies. Logic title developers function at the hard edge interactive creation, developing some of most fundamental forms of the video game form. Comparable to cinema stunt performers, they deserve recognition. We shouldn't delay decades.
