Wimbledon Embraces Video Review Technology in 2025.

The Championships tennis court with video review technology

Wimbledon will follow the American and Australian Opens in implementing video review systems.

Video review technology are set to arrive at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.

Competitors are granted the option to question specific rulings from the chair umpire, mirroring the protocol already in operation at both the US Open and the Australian Open.

This innovation will be operational on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This development comes just a season following the All England Club introduced electronic line calling, which brought an end to the centuries-old tradition of line officials.

Reviewable Decisions

Players will not be permitted to challenge the call of the ELC system, but they can ask for the umpire to re-examine other situations, including:

  • Whether a ball has bounced twice.
  • If a shot made contact with an rival's racket or person during play.
  • Potential interference end of a rally.

Importantly, there will be no limit on the number of challenges a player can ask for.

Practical Application

An illustrative example occurred in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against his opponent.

Draper conceded it was a tough call for the official, but thought his rival had "used the regulations effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and determined the player was guilty of hindrance, awarding the point to Medvedev.

Growing Trend

This technology are not new for major tournaments. It has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit plans to have video reviews in place at all of its events.

Other Changes

A further innovation at Wimbledon 2025 will be the introduction of graphical cues on scoreboards to complement the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This solves instances where fans have occasionally been uncertain whether a ball was out or in.

In other news, with exactly 100 days remaining until the start of the Championships, the AELTC have also revealed an increase in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
